Motel History
In the early times the site was occupied by beach batches,
three in total and it was not until the late 60's that the idea of a Motel was conceived. The original
owner/builder was an Architect, so the first units built are a strange shape - not a square coner to be found -
which turned out to be a nightmare for builders!
Reg Greenstede (the architect), had guest comfort as a
priority and the result was a pleasant and warm friendly atmosphere, completely sound proof and safe. Reg then
built two more units on the waters edge, driven by popular demand - known as unit 6&7. Unit 6 was to be the
"deluxe" model and unit 7 was to be his residence overlooking the water. However, the demand was so high, he never
got to live in unit 7 afterall!
The original house formely a one bedroom cottage with an
office added, is now a four bedroom house with a gym room, beside the pool. A new roof was added later to add to
the appeal.
The motel changed hands several times, Russell and Judy
Chamers owned it in the early 70's, then Howard Ironside and his wife purchased it in the mid 70's and they sold to
the current owners John and Joyce Haigh in 1980.
John built the last black units 9-12 in the 80's and ran the
motel for the three years before leasing the business. Over the years since then several couples worked the lease
and enjoyed the lifestyle provided at Fountain Court Motel.
Due to change in circumstances, John and Joyce took up the
reins again in September 2009. Since then they have fully refurbished all the units inside and out, and have worked
tirelessly to provide excellence in cleanliness and service.
"We believe the original architect would be proud of his
motel, freshly painted, fully refurbished, new tarseal driveway, even a large mural at the fountain!" Says
John
John has also won "Commercial Garden of the Year" twice when
he originally was in residence. The original fountain was over a fish pond in the centre of the complex, which is
where the name "Fountain Court Motel" originated. We now have a beautiful mural for all guests to
enjoy.
